If you participate in anyway in the Natural Hair Community, be it through blogs, YouTube, Twitter, etc., then you should be familiar with Hair Typing & Terminology. For any of you who aren’t familiar please allow me to explain.
Hair typing is a system that was created by Andre Walker (Oprah’s Stylist) that allows a person to determine what type hair they have as in, straight, kinky, curly, nappy, wavy etc. Andre created the system in an effort to help women to understand their hair textures, thereby allowing them to know what products & care may work best for their hair. I believe the same thing holds true regarding Our Natural Kids. If you know what your child’s hair type or hair texture is, then you can better figure what your child’s hair needs. Here are the definitions of each type & sub-type taken directly from Andre’s book: “Andre Talks Hair!”
Type 1 – Straight hair. This hair holds no curl
1a – Hair tends to be fine, thin & supersoft
1b – Hair is medium textured with a lot of body
1c – Hair is coarse & the most resistant to curling & shaping
*Care & Feeding Type 1 hair – Wash daily. Use gentle shampoos. Avoid heavy conditioners. Use moisturizing condish once a month.
Type 2 – Wavy Hair – Coarse with a S – pattern curl
2a – Hair is fine & thin. straightens & curls with ease
2b – Hair is medium textured tends to hug head
2c – Hair is coarse & tends to frizz
*Care & Feeding Type 2 hair – Wash Daily or Every other day. Use a moisturizing condish once a week
Type 3 – Curly Hair – hair has lots of body
3a – Hair has shiny loose curls
3b – Hair has medium curls… ranging from bouncy ringlets to tight corkscrews
*Care & Feeding Type 3 hair – Wash every 3 days. (follow every wash with a condish) Wet every day. Deep condish 2x a month.
Type 4 – Kinky Hair – very tightly curled
4a – Hair tends to be tightly coiled with a definate curl pattern
4b – Hair has a z pattern with a wry texture
4c – (This subtype is not l in Andre’s book, but I have seen it used to describe a very coarse texture with no defined curl pattern)
*Care & Feeding Type 4 hair – Wash 1x a week. (Andre suggests a protein based shampoo made from all natural ingredients.) Wet every day. Deep condish 2x a month
*All hair types should use a clarifying shampoo once every 6 weeks to combat product buildup.
